Farming Cooperative: APECAP is an organic, Fair Trade coffee growers cooperative with 185 members. An outbreak of coffee leaf rust (roya) decreased its coffee production by half, but because they replaced affected trees and contained the mold with organic spray solutions and innovative soil composting, production levels had recovered in 2017.

To encourage the highest standards of quality among its members, FAPECAFES (the acronym for a larger coffee cooperative organization that includes APECAP) holds an annual cupping competition as part of its “Bracamoros Coffee” festival. The goal is to encourage Ecuador’s growing coffee industry while revealing how its cherries are distinct from those just across the border in Peru.
