Co-Op Details: FAPECAFES is an organic, Fair Trade coffee growers cooperative with more than 1,800 members. They grow and wash 600,000 pounds of coffee each year, an amount equivalent to about 12 shipping containers of green beans. The cooperative formed in 2002 and received its Fair Trade certification in 2003. An outbreak of coffee leaf rust (roya) cut production in half in 2014, but because they replaced affected trees and contained the mold with organic spray solutions and innovative soil composting, production levels are expected to recover this year.

About 95 percent the farmers who grow for the FAPECAFES work plots of land smaller than 25 acres. To encourage the highest standards of quality among its members, the co-op holds an annual cupping competition as part of its “Bracamoros Coffee” festival. The goal is to encourage Ecuador’s budding coffee industry while revealing how its cherries are distinct from those just across the border in Peru. FAPECAFES” is an acronym that stands for “Federación Regional de Asociaciones de Pequeños Cafetaleros Ecológicos del Sur,” which translates to “Regional Federation of Small Organic Coffee Growers Association of Southern Ecuador.”
