Bongo Java Roasting Co. is our company's coffee roasting operation which shares space with Cafe East.
BJRC supplies coffee to the entire Bongo World Empire (Bongo Java, Fido, Grins and Cafe East) and numerous other coffeehouses, restaurants, bagel shops, universities and small businesses around Nashville and the good ole USA (list).
Quality
We take quality seriously. We feel a strong obligation to not screw up the incredible efforts farmers have made to overcome huge economic and physical hardships to produce quality coffee.
We believe in an expanded definition of quality that adds concerns about how the coffee was grown and purchased to the important issue of taste.
Thus, we only buy organic coffee from small-scale farmers at or above the "Fair Trade" price.
The taste component is handled by an independent professoinal cupper and our Roast Master. The cupper tests the beans before we buy them and our Roast Master uses his skills to bring out the maximum unique flavor of each bean.
Each step from roasting to brewing is therefore critical.
* We roast in small batches (less than 50 pounds).
* We vacuum pack our coffee in valve bags to assure freshness.
* We delivery or ship coffee to our wholesale customers every week.
* We tune and clean our brewing and grinding equipment regularly.
* We train and re-train our employees and our customers to properly brew coffee and make espresso drinks.
* And we have fun.

History
The roasting company originally was located inside our Fido location. The wholesale business simply outgrew that space and was moved to its current location in July 2000.
Awards
BJRC supplies the coffee to two sister-operations (Bongo Java and Fido) that have collectively been named "Best Coffeehouse" by the alternative weekly Nashville Scene annually from 1994 - 2006. We've taken the top two places since we've had two stores (1998).
Our Mystic Brew took top honors in the Blend Division at the first Cooperative Coffee Cupping Competition.
Recognition
BJRC owner Bob Bernstein has twice been selected as a speaker at the annual Specialty Coffee Association of America conference.
Cooperative Coffees
Bongo Java was one of seven founding members of Cooperative Coffees, the only such group of small roasters joined together to buy organic/fair trade coffee directly from small farmer groups.
